How to Make Shipping Labels

Shipping labels go on packages so carriers know where to deliver them. With Labeliy, you design your own shipping label, add a list of addresses, and print them all in one go.

Note: Labeliy is for designing and printing your own custom shipping labels. If you need carrier-generated labels with tracking numbers (USPS, FedEx, UPS), those come from each carrier's website or shipping software.

What Size Is a Shipping Label?#

The most common shipping label size is 4 inches wide × 6 inches tall — the standard used by USPS, FedEx, and UPS thermal label printers.

If you're using a regular inkjet or laser printer with Avery sheets, Avery 5163 gives you 10 labels per sheet at 4" × 2" — a bit shorter but works for lighter packages.

Option A — A Thermal Label Printer#

1. Open labeliy.com/label-maker
2. Click the Thermal tab in the setup window
3. Set Width to 4 and Height to 6
4. Click Start Designing

Option B — An Avery Sheet#

1. Keep Label Sheet selected in the setup window
2. Search for Avery 5163 and click the result
3. Click Start Designing

Step 2 — Add Your Elements#

Click Text in the toolbar and place elements for the recipient's name, address, and any reference number. Or start from a design — see Browsing Label Design Templates.

Step 3 — Make Your Fields Dynamic#

Select each text element, turn on Dynamic Data, and give it a clear Column Name — name, address, city, state, zip. See Making an Element Dynamic.

Step 4 — Add Your Recipient Addresses#

Click Add Data and fill in one row per shipment:

Step 5 — Print#

Click Print. Set Scale to 100% — never "Fit to page" — and Margins to None. Click Print.

Tips for Shipping Labels#

Add your return address too. Add a small static text element in the top-left corner with your business name and address. Only make it dynamic if you ship from multiple locations.

Use a QR code for order lookup. Add a dynamic QR code element and set it to encode your order number, so packages can be scanned without reading the text.

Print a test first. Print one page on plain paper and hold it against the sheet to check alignment before using real label sheets.
